William S. Heichel, age 59, of 2209 Center Court N.W., passed away Wednesday evening at Aultman Hospital after suddenly becoming ill at his office earlier in the day. He was a life resident of Canton and a 1952 graduate of McKinley High School. He also was a 1956 graduate of Baldwin-Wallace College and a 1960 graduate of Harvard Law School with a Doctor of Jurisprudence Degree. He was an attorney-at-law and partner in the law firm of Herbruck, Heichel & McFarren.
He was the legal counsel for the Ohio High School Athletic Association, member of Ohio Council of School Board Attorneys, and member of the Stark County, Ohio and American Bar Associations. Mr. Heichel was a member of Church of The Savior, United Methodist, where he served on the Administrative Council 12 years and was vice-chairman, and also was chairman of the Board of Trustees of the church. He also was chairman of the East Ohio Conference, United Methodist Church Board of Trustees. He was a member and past president of the Canton City Schools Board of Education, which he served 12 years. He also was a former secretary of the Canton Civil Service Commission for 10 years; Trustee of Baldwin-Wallace College, and served on several committees; member of the Advisory Board of Buckeye Council, Boy Scouts of America; board member for Ohio Special Olympics; member of Rotary Club of Plain Township; and member of the Board of Trustees for Canton City Schools Foundation. Mr. Heichel was honored with the Distinguished Alumni Award from Baldwin-Wallace College, the Silver Beaver Award of Boy Scouts of America, and in 1962 was named the Jaycees Outstanding Young Man for Canton, Ohio, and one of Five Outstanding Young Men for the State of Ohio. For many years he was the announcer for Sectional-District and Regional Basketball Tournaments at the Civic Center, and for the past several years was announcer for McKinley football games. He also was announcer for the State Playoff football games held at Fawcett Stadium. Mr. Heichel is survived by brother, John S. Heichel of Canton, one nephew and two nieces. Services will be conducted Saturday, 3 p.m. at the Church of The Savior, United Methodist, at the corner of Cleveland Ave. and West Tusc. St., with Dr. William R. Harvey officiating. Interment in Forest Hill Cemetery. Friends may call Saturday, 1 to 3 p.m. at the church. In lieu of flowers, contributions in Mr. Heichel's memory may be made to either the William S.
